Perception is a strange thing. In many ways we (the universal “we”) want to think that we come to the table wide open, ready for the world to present us its reality. We want to believe that we are merely observers of some objective truth that is indisputable and irrefutable. As storytellers this is about as bogus as it gets. Life fills us with dimples and imperfections that draw deep our unique line in the sand.
In early May 2012, while Louisville was drunk on horseracing and chaos, Kertis Creative sent two video producers to Thailand to teach a group of international students the ins, outs, ups, downs, and general aggravations of being storytellers. These workshops mean a lot to us. We feel that the world would be better serviced if more people looked at the universality of our experiences.
Brett Marshall captured the ceremony and intensity at a Muay Thai kickboxing exhibition a bit further south in Chiang Mai, Thailand. With our curiosities piqued by “Blood Sport” and “Blood Sport II”, there was no way we would miss a chance to be in the crowd. We can attest that it was nothing like we were expecting.
Stephen Kertis spent time with a group of novice monks at a monastery in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Many of the monks are from Myanmar (Burma) and were given to the monastery by family members for the opportunity of a better life. If they commit to being practicing monks for 15 years they are granted Thai citizenship.
Surrounding these words are glimpses of our adventures in teaching storytelling abroad. That is about as objective as it gets.
