Artist Spotlight: Angryblue & MissHappyPink

Where did the name Angryblue come from?

ANGRYBLUE: Unfortunately, I don’t have a clever backstory. It’s based on a nickname a close friend had for me. I was going to try to come up with a scenario involving post-apocalyptic vampire penguins to explain it, but just couldn’t get it polished correctly.

And, was MissHappyPink some cosmic naming coincidence or derived from Angryblue?

MISSHAPPYPINK: Someone (me) was making fun of – errr – I mean, joking around with Angryblue about how pretty some flowers were that he was drawing. I was calling him different names besides Angryblue. And HappyPink made me giggle. So last November when I decided that I was going to start printing my own designs, the name resurfaced and became mine. I’m not sure how the “Miss” was added on, but I’m glad it was.

Do you guys both work exclusively on your art fulltime or do you have day jobs or other gigs to make ends meet?

BLUE: I have been lucky enough to be able to work for myself for about six to seven years now. Jeral Tidwell (the other evil piece of Crackhead Press) sort of bullied me into quitting my “make the logo bigger” job. And I can’t imagine working in an office environment again.

I juggle whatever random jobs happen to come up to scrape by, while trying to focus on making my own art prints and gig posters, along with the recent venture of Ouisch clothing with Will Ragland (from The Revenants/All Dead)

PINK: I was in retail management for eight years, but once I starting designing, I realized that my passion was in printing and designing. So, in June, I took a chance in life and quit my day job to follow my dreams. I’ve spent the last three months building my own business, designing prints, setting up at shows, and whoring myself out, while working side jobs to cover the bills. I just accepted a full-time position at a local print shop and am very excited about where that knowledge and experience will take me.

With you both being visual creatives, do your personal and professional lives cross paths?

PINK: Absolutely they cross paths. We are each other’s biggest fans and greatest supporters.

BLUE: Living together and trying to stay in a constant state of brainstorming definitely gives us both an instant springboard for ideas – either to shoot down a terrible idea or to figure out how to help polish a rough idea into a finished product.

Generally, we don’t sit over each other’s shoulders while working, or necessarily want advice on each step of the process, but, for most of the things we do, we at least have a “what do you think?” sort of discussion.

PINK: We are like every other couple that asks “How was your day?” Every day we chat about what we are designing, what we are working on, or simply what we did that day. So it’s only natural, since we are both visual and creative, to give advice and critiques of our work.

BLUE: Sometimes it’s not fruitful and we each do what we want to do anyway. For instance, I had my Angryblue Superfuntime! sticker packs brewing as an idea and she didn’t understand why I was using such different colors than my normal palette. I had a specific feel I was going for and she didn’t really get it until I was done. We’re naturally going to have a little bit of that, as we’ve got a different mindset about what our products are going to be.

PINK: But once I saw the design laid out, it clicked. They turned out amazing and I have covered everything in those stickers!

BLUE: She has her strengths too that are very helpful. She has a business background and mindset that I don’t necessarily have. While I’ve gotten good at interacting and attempting to try to expand my audience, I’m at times a little quick to throw an idea out there that is still in a sketch phase and hasn’t had time to get the polish to make it even worth showing. She’s also really good about suggesting ways to deal with clients or customers who might be rubbing me wrong, when I want to respond in a childish way.

PINK: And he has been an amazing mentor for me. I’ve never taken a Photoshop class or didn’t know how to hold a squeegee. Over the past six years that we’ve know each other, I’ve observed, asked a lot of questions, spent a lot of time at the print shop, and been his assistant at poster shows. Helping support him was the foundation for everything I’m doing now. He bought me the book that I consider my design bible: “Graphic Design for Non-Designers” by Tony Seddon and Jane Waterhouse.

BLUE: Also, I think her total opposite visual approach has made me adjust my style tremendously. It makes me think in a broader scale that ends up making even more ideas pop up.

PINK: I make cute things and he draws dead things. They say that opposites attract!
