Everybody In: Home of the Innocents opens therapy pool to public use

Gray skies, dropping temperatures, snowstorms (read: two inches of powder), and general wintery blahs can settle in for most Louisvillians by early January, and the promise of spring (read: two days of 70 degree weather followed by blistering summer heat) seems far too distant.

Fortunately, a cure to winter malaise exists at the end of East Market Street. The Home of the Innocents’ (HOTI) Kay and Jim Morrissey Advanced Therapy Center has opened its saltwater therapy pool for public use. The therapy pool is now available to adults and children for one hour sessions, and is ideal for those wanting to reap the therapeutic benefits of the 92 degree water, parents seeking a relaxing recreational environment for their children, and anyone wanting to participate in aquatic classes. Class highlights include arthritis aquatic therapy, water Pilates, Aqua Flow (a blend of water aerobics, yoga, tai chi and relaxation), Aquapressure™, youth fitness and wellness classes, and swim lessons for children and adults. Outside therapists can also use the pool for sessions with their clients.

Children at the Home of the Innocents have already begun participating in aqua therapy thanks to the Therapy Center. The center, which is fully accessible to those with special needs and includes a chair and stretcher lift, exercise benches, and a splash area for the little ones. The aquatic program also provides respiratory therapy, specifically serving children with tracheotomies and ventilator dependencies. Milton Schmidt, manager of the respiratory therapy program at Home of the Innocents, has devised a waterproof container that allows the ventilator to float in the water alongside the patient.

The therapy pool’s salt water also serves as its own source of renewable disinfectant to keep swimmers safe. The pool’s technology allows it to generate chlorine from salt, and unused chlorine combines with sodium to form salt again.

Before you dig out the swimsuit and dive in, take note: Pool patrons must provide a signed therapy pool physician form prior to entering the pool. Anyone interested can download a blank physician form from homeoftheinnocents.org. Individuals can also provide HOTI with their primary care doctor’s information and a HOTI staff member will complete the form request.

The Kay and Jim Morrissey Advanced Therapy Center is located at Home of the Innocents on East Market Street. Along with the therapy pool, the center also includes a gym, therapy rooms and a catering kitchen, and is available for rentals. Therapy pool entrance fees start at a per hourly visit for general admission with monthly individual and family memberships available. For a full list of admission rates, class descriptions and schedules, and pool hours, visit homeoftheinnocents.org or call (502) 596-1141.
