In Search of Ice Cream

I’ve spent the better part of three decades in Louisville, yet I’m still not used to Ohio Valley summers. A layer of sweat coats my face for a solid three months. I forgo hot showers in favor of lukewarm drizzles. It’s not just hot in Louisville, it’s humid – a word that hangs just as heavy as the thick air it describes. Each day seems hotter than the one before. Each season breaks last year’s records. Each year I complain from dawn to dusk about how miserable I feel.

Thank goodness for ice cream. A frozen treat at the end of a stifling day works wonders. Whether a cone, cup, sundae, or shake, a cold dessert or drink is imperative to survival as summer descends upon Louisville like a used towel.

Fortunately, there is a solid collection of places to get a taste of sweet relief in Louisville, including coffee houses, ice cream shops, and even street carts. They all can help melt the summer blues, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen

Nine locations, piekitchen.com

There is a lot to love about this local chain of dessert shops. Homemade Ice Cream & Pie Kitchen’s ice cream is churned from milk and cream from a local dairy and is free of artificial growth hormones. It doesn’t hurt that the ice cream is also pretty darn tasty. Pie Kitchen’s variety of flavors, including gluten-free options, can satisfy a crowd.

FLAVOR TO TRY:
Peace, love & chocolate, a concoction that contains four different types of chocolate.

The Comfy Cow

Three locations, thecomfycow.com

This ice cream shop is a newbie to the Louisville dessert lineup, but The Comfy Cow is leaving a big impression on the city. The Comfy Cow has been served at Louisville Slugger Field and the Barnstable Brown party, along with its Frankfort Avenue, Westport Village, and University of Louisville stores. The Comfy Cow uses high quality ingredients and regularly introduces new and inventive flavors. Chocolate bourbon, anyone?

FLAVOR TO TRY:
Strawberry fields forever, full of hunks of real fruit.

Schimpff’s Confectionery

347 Spring Street, Jeffersonville, Ind., schimpffs.com

Schimpff’s Confectionery offers a lot in such a tiny Jeffersonville storefront. The century-old store is a hybrid candy shop, candy museum, and old-fashioned soda counter and deli. When you’ve had your fill of the candy scooped by the pound in the front of the store, head to the lunch counter for a taste of nostalgia served up in malts, floats, and shakes.

FLAVOR TO TRY:

The strawberry shake, thick enough to be a meal.

Proof on Main gelato cart

702 West Main Street, Louisville, Ky., proofonmain.com

The gelato cart might be the closest that some of us get to eating at Proof on Main, the high-end restaurant in 21c Museum Hotel. Proof rolls the cart on to Main Street from noon to 5 p.m. every Thursday during the summer. Flavors change weekly, so you have to follow the gelato cart’s Twitter feed to see what’s available (twitter.com/proofgelato).

FLAVOR TO TRY:

Sea salt caramel, an unlikely yet delicious duo.

Graeter’s

Seven locations, graeters.com

If you have ever visited the Ohio Valley, you’ve probably heard of this ice cream chain. Graeter’s began in 1870 in Cincinnati and spread into Kentucky, leaving fans in Louisville, Lexington, Newport, and Fort Mitchell. You can order pints online if it gets too hot to venture out, but watching someone scoop a load of black cherry ice cream into a waffle cone is part of the fun.

FLAVOR TO TRY:

Mango sorbet, when you need something a little lighter than ice cream.

Highland Coffee

1140 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Ky., highlandcoffee.com

A cup of coffee is mandatory on weekday mornings, but I switch to the iced variety when the weather turns muggy. Highland Coffee not only offers iced coffee, but its menu includes blended freezes that provide much needed caffeine at a lower temperature and an excellent way to fit espresso into a dessert. You can even choose flavors like peanut butter, Heath bar, and cookies and cream.

FLAVOR TO TRY:

Iced Swiss mocha with Ghirardelli white chocolate and whipped cream, when you want to indulge while you cool off.
