Mama Likes: Lego KidsFest

Seriously, Mama really likes LEGO bricks. And Mama’s family likes LEGO bricks too. The highlight of our last trip to Florida was not the beach or the Kennedy Space Center, but LEGO LAND. If you and your kids are as enthusiastic as we are about the little plastic bricks, then drop everything and buy your tickets to LEGO KidsFest! This is the expo’s first stop in Louisville and, if sales figures indicate a pattern, the event may sell out early.

Aaron Wartner, vice president of sales and marketing for LEGO KidsFest, shared what to expect when you unleash the kids at the Kentucky Exposition Center in April.

“It’s a gigantic LEGO expo that is highly interactive,” said Wartner. “It’s all about building and experiencing LEGO in ways you can’t at home.”

Wartner also explained how LEGO KidsFest will fill over 200,000 square feet of the north wing at the Expo Center:

1. Areas devoted to several of LEGO ’s product lines: LEGO Friends, LEGO Chima, etc.

2. Areas where kids can build individually or collaboratively, including a huge brick pile similar to a ball pit.

“[Kids can] jump in, swim in, and build in,” said Wartner. “And Mom, Dad, and Grandma may end up in it too.”

According to Wartner, all of the areas are about building.

“Very little is about looking,” said Wartner.

In one activity area, kids will work as teams to build a bridge, a tower, or even a Krabby Patty. LEGO Mike, the emcee, will host the event and help each team understand the physics and engineering behind building a better model.

Wartner said there will be a LEGO DUPLO section for younger children, so bring your whole family.

3. The LEGO Model Museum, where you might see life-size models of Yoda, Gandalf, or Lightning McQueen. Wartner couldn’t guarantee which models would be on exhibit, so you’ll have to see for yourself.

4. LEGO Master Builder Academy, where visitors can meet two LEGO Master Builders who will share building tips and tricks. There are only seven Master Builders in the United States, so two in one place is quite a treat for kids and adults alike.

5. Creation Nation, an area the size of a basketball court set up to look like a map of the U.S., where visitors can help build each state with LEGO bricks over the course of the weekend.

6. The LEGO Retail Store, where you can buy a variety of LEGO sets, and the LEGO Marketplace for LEGO brand merchandise like T-shirts, backpacks, and notebooks.

7. Exhibits from local attractions and vendors.

One of the vendors who is excited to be a part of LEGO KidsFest is Bricks 4 Kidz. Sharon Dodson, managing director of the Louisville franchise, explained her company and their participation in LEGO KidsFest.

Bricks 4 Kidz is the brainchild of a downsized architect/mom named Michelle Cote from St. Augustine, Florida. Dodson, a former chemical engineer, was one of the first franchisees to jump on board. In only three years, the number of franchises has grown from two to three to over 100 worldwide.

Locally, Dodson and her staff of teachers provide extracurricular LEGO activities to teach basic principals of architecture, engineering, robotics, and science. She has after-school programs in schools throughout Jefferson, Oldham, and Shelby counties; popular LEGO camps at the Jewish Community Center, St. Francis School, and Chance School; and programs at Our Lady of Peace and Brooklawn Child and Family Services. She also hosts birthday parties and provides in-school field trips – one-day events she brings to classrooms. All of her lesson plans connect to the curriculum of the school where she brings her bricks. At LEGO KidsFest, Dodson will have a host of LEGO activities, models, and face painting.

The main thing Dodson wants to impart to all LEGO enthusiasts at both her workshops and at LEGO KidsFest is the importance of the inspiration to keep creating.

“You don’t have to buy one boxed [LEGO ] set and you’re done,” said Dodson.

Dodson recommends that children build something new and create a new piece out of the set they just finished. Parents should challenge their kids to see how tall they can build or how many colors they can involve.

Wartner agreed with this sentiment.

“The great thing about LEGO is it’s a new toy every day.”

Come build your new toy at LEGO KidsFest. It’s only here one weekend. And I won’t judge you if you come without kids.
