New Years Resolutions for Louisville’s Film Lover

You love movies?  Want to support the local film scene and expand your cinema knowledge?  Here are some tips!

Support Your Local Film Festival

Louisville is lucky to have several established film festivals throughout the year.  The Derby City Film Festival runs every February with an abundance of independent and micro-budget short and feature-length films at bargain prices – see this year’s line-up at www.derbycityfilmfest.com.  Also in February, the Jewish Film Festival features the best in Jewish-themed films from around the world.  Flyover Film Festival, the signature event for the Louisville Film Society, lands in Louisville every June and strives to showcase a wide variety of film styles while celebrating Kentucky connections.  The Louisville International Festival of Film is a massive undertaking held every October with an eye on Hollywood.   With so many choices, it’s hard for the film fan not to find some hidden gems among the choices.
However, support comes not only from ticket sales, but also through volunteer time and sponsorships, usually with some great perks from the inside track.  Reach out to your favorite festival and offer your time to take tickets, hang posters, or drive a guest from the airport and who knows how you’ll be rewarded.

Support Your Local Filmmaker

In addition to these annual festivals, there are plenty of filmmaker and youth-oriented micro-festivals held every year for the budding auteur to participate.  These include the fun 48-Hour Film Festival, held every summer, and the Bellewood Youth Film Festival, whose deadline fast approaches on January 15th. Encourage the young Wes Anderson to get to work and showcase his or her film. Dreamland Film Center offers a venue for the working filmmaker to host test screenings and premiere events; keep an eye open for the Dreamland schedule and check out films made by local and not-so artists year-round.

Keep Vigilant!

The Louisville Exclusives series at Village 8 offers Louisvillians a chance to see independent films from China to NYC.   Films run for only a short time, so the film lover has to keep a vigilant watch over the schedule, but at only $5, it’s worth the extra effort.  Louisville’s best-kept secret is the Floyd Theatre on U of L’s campus, running a large variety of rarely seen and second-run films, all while having the lowest ticket and concession prices in town.

Talk to Your Video Store Clerk

The clerks at Wild and Woolly Video know a lot about zombie movies. And documentaries about cover bands.  And Iranian New Wave Films.  And that movie starring that guy, you know, that guy with the hair.  Every Tuesday, the store offers a free film from a specific category; take advantage of the person behind the counter and let the experts curate your viewing experience for an evening!  Ask for a great epic film to watch on a sleepy, rainy day.  Or a great slumber party movie (may I suggest”Clue.”
Here’s to another year of wonderful and weird film in Louisville. See you at the movies!
