G: Yeah, no one else had even seemingly thought to do that. It was a testing ground for us, anyway – I don’t remember what we charged.
K: It was maybe $10? A car?
G: Which seems really low.
K: Yeah.
G: Considering how close we were [to the Downs].
K: We had that epic backyard.
G: It was a parking lot.
K: It would park like 5 across.
G: Packed.
K: So I guess 10 is about right for the actual paved part plus however many fit in the yard.
G: We had some system set up with a board with the keys on it.
K: Everybody in the building brought really great food.
G: …And this wasn’t like “put your car in my front yard.” We’re around back, we have a parking lot, we’re holding keys in case we have to move them.
K: Right.
G: We looked professional in a way that the guy without teeth riding on the fender. did not.
K: Which – that was fascinating, too – not only did we have more business on Derby but the nature of the competition that we had on Derby –
G: -was fierce. We were at 4th just south of – what was it, Taylor?
K: Central.
G: You’re right. Just off the part that floods all the time, by the university…so yeah, easy for a – for a sober person to walk to the Downs.
K: (laughs) Getting back was another…
G: I was impressed that anyone found us – like remembered where their car was.
K: I was too. And we had sent – on Derby – the ladies [in the apartments] had gone down to try to attract some attention away from the runners. And the woman across from us – she was probably 30 but she had a 65 year-old woman’s voice from the smoking.
G: ‘Park it!’
K: ‘Parkin’ Lot! Park in my mother’s yard! Parkin’ Lot! Park in my mother’s yard!’
G: Which, I was fascinated because. I’m projecting, but if I’m driving around a neighborhood looking for parking and I’m going to say, ‘Yes, I’m probably going to park in someone’s yard and not in a sanctioned lot.’ I’m going to—I feel like the opportunists—these are not people with sound marketing strategies beyond, ‘I possess a yard. Let me fill it with your car. Give me money for that service.’
K: Yes -proximity and opportunity is all that’s happening there.
G: But it was purely a competition.
K: Do you remember that day, though, that we were mildly paranoid that [our landlord] might be a Derby-goer?
G: ‘Should we save a spot?’
K: And if he comes to see what we’ve done, would that be an issue?
G: ‘Oh, hi – we’re just cookin’ out! Makin’ money off your property.’
K: (laughs) With 25 cars in the backyard. I never understood fully the draw of it being her mother’s yard. But still the highlight of the day were the block runners, the people that would run.
G: Yes, and ride the car back. I always thought of them as like, you know in “On Golden Pond,” where he makes the teenager ride on the front of the boat to look for rocks? But yeah, there’s guy I remember.
K: With a ball cap?
G: Yeah – I mean, that’s probably all of them, but my memory is that.
K: But he seemed to be the Alpha of the group. Seemed to be the most confident on the hood –
G: Smack, smack [on the hood.] ‘Go!’
K: -the most natural about the process.
G: Like he just did this, like this is what he did, was sold his lot for parking. But it’s like the neighborhood was preparing for that – like that’s the way it going to celebrate Derby. I don’t think anyone went. Because it seemed that every house…
