Sounds That Sound Good

Like many Louisville bands, Nerves Junior began as less as a rock band and more as a gathering of friends who jammed until something resembling a song emerged. It’s the post-rock way, and Louisville is a post-rock kind of town.

“We weren’t a great band; it was mostly big long noise rock jams,” guitarist Stuart Phelps said. “I guess we had to do that to know we didn’t want to do that.” In those early days, “We just wanted to make fucked up sounds,” guitarist Christopher Snow said. “Then we realized you have to make it listenable, too.”

After years of this sort of tinkering, Nerves Junior re-focused. Line-up changes were made and a new emphasis was placed on songwriting- actual songwriting, with structure and forethought. The effort culminates in “As Bright as Your Night Light,” Nerves Junior’s debut album to be released via SonaBlast! Records in September.

On the sonic Venn Diagram, Nerves Junior’s songs place in the shaded area between experimental and straight-rock, using electronics and noise to augment structured songs and singer Cory Wayne’s dour lyrics.

“I want to have songs that people can sing along to,” Snow said. “You don’t have to meditate and look for meaning in these songs.”

Most of Nerves Junior’s songs originate with Wayne, but the songs — and the band’s moody but intriguing sound — are forged through the other members’ divergent interests in hard rock and experimental noise. This creative method is a surefire way brew conflict, the way so many bands with potential fold before their prime, ending with the dreaded “creative differences.” But, Snow notes, the members are old friends who can disagree, argue and even come to blows without risking the band’s existence. “We know where the other one is thinking,” Snow said.

Nerves Junior fits well into the SonaBlast! roster. The five members aren’t exactly old-time Louisville scenesters with lots of friends; not the sort of guys who local audiences will judge in part through the context of past performance. Nerves Junior earned what they’ve gotten so far by making lasting impressions. Last year, the band opened for the reigning blogger It-Band Cults and killed. Suddenly, a local music industry that had politely told Nerves Junior to keep in touch were actively recruiting them and the band found itself with financing for a full-length record, which was recorded at Kevin Ratterman’s Funeral Home studio.

It’s a pretty perch for a mostly unproven band. “Indie labels don’t give out advances, but Gill Holland does,” Snow said, referring to SonaBlast!’s boss. It’s mostly true. The music industry is risk averse because of the shaky economy and a general failure to adapt to new distribution technology. Small labels would rather new bands make (and finance) their records before releasing them. Nerves Junior didn’t have to do that. Now they have to convert Holland’s faith in their potential into some sort of success.

“As Bright as Your Night Light” is a good start. Nerves Junior intends to tour this fall after the album is released. They’ll have a daunting challenge on Halloween, too, as they were asked to cover Radiohead’s seminal album “Kid A” at a Headliners show with other SonaBlast! artists. “We’re going to try to do it as best we can,” Snow said, laughing. “We’re going to try to be the best band in the world for a night.”

Aside from a tonal similarity to Radiohead, the “Kid A” cover represents another proving ground for a fledgling band and also alludes to the band’s confidence and ambition. “We don’t mean to be disrespectful; we like a lot of bands in Louisville, but we want to be much bigger than Louisville,” Snow said. “For all its eccentricities, there’s not a lot of bands in Louisville trying really hard to do anything different.”

With that statement is another challenge to a band eager to prove themselves.
