SOME (other) Things to do during Derby season

As every local knows, the Derby celebration is a month-long bourbon-tinged party filled with brunches, galas, and drinking lunches. And that it begins the first week of April. We here at The Paper have dug deep, passing up some over-hyped and lofty-priced events to curate a Derby month with a little something for everyone, pocketbooks big and small. And for those of you who may be in a julep-induced haze, we’ve sprinkled in a few reminders, so you’re not caught with your seersuckers around your ankles come the big day.

April 7 – Friday

First Friday
Trolley Hop
Kick Derby month off right by shopping, eating. and drinking your way around the ever growing NuLu.

Find your hat
Ladies, will you be donning a feather fascinator or a brightly colored, wide-brimmed number? No matter, as long as it’s some shade of fabulous. Spending the big day with an exposed head is a major Derby no-no, so start shopping now.

April 14 – Saturday

Short Film Screening
at Sunergos
Get your funny bone tickled, while being infused with caffeinated goodness. Sunergos Coffee will be premiering a short film entitled Monkey Mocha Fantastique, “a comedic short film directed by Louisville’s own William Wallace.” Plus, coffee samples! 6:30 p.m. at the Woodlawn location.

Fix up, Look Sharp
Guys, have you scoured your favorite local thrift or vintage for that perfect seersucker suit? Better get crackin’ or you won’t have time to have it cleaned before the big day.

April 19 – Thursday

“Gonzo Derby: An Experience” Art Exhibition
Inspired by an article about his experience at the Kentucky Derby by Hunter S. Thompson, The Louisville Artists Syndicate has collected artist’s renditions of their own Derby experiences. Check it out, it’s sure to be an experience. 6:00 p.m. – 8:00.

April 21 – Saturday

Thunder

ThunderBlast 2012:
Rock The Block!

Skip being herded with the masses at the typical Thunder viewing spots and enjoy the spectacle at the Science Center with the whole family. ThunderBlast 2012: Rock The Block! 2:00 p.m. – 11:00 Tickets start at $40, children and $65, adult.

Reserve your keg
Throwing the best Derby bash around? It won’t be unless you put that keg on reserve. And let’s face it, you’ll probably need two.

Taste of Bullitt County

Frankfort Ave. Trolley Hop, Derby Edition
Enjoy all that historic Frankfort Ave has to offer in this Derby edition of their monthly trolley hop. Wear a Derby hat and get a discount at some of the great stores along the route.

Get some Balls
Bourbon Balls are a must for any good Derby party, but you should probably leave the making of them to the professionals. Get down to your local chocolatier and pick up a box.

41st annual Cherokee Triangle Art Fair
Continue the Derby count down by checking out local artists and soaking up music and culture at this two day art fair in historic Cherokee Triangle. Cherokee Parkway between Willow Avenue and Cherokee Road, April 28-29

Head over to Carmichael’s Bookstore’s Frankfort Avenue location to hear an excerpt from Susan Nusser’s new book Kentucky Derby Dreams: The Making of a Thoroughbred Champion and get your copy signed. 4 p.m.

May 3 – Thursday

Oaks Eve

Derby Thursday Brunch at The Speed Museum
As every good college student knows, the weekend starts on Thursday. If you like a little art with your brunch, head over to the Speed where admission gets you a lovely brunch, entrance into the Renoir to Chagall: Paris and the Allure of Color exhibit and a shuttle to and from Churchill Downs, which you’ll need after all those mimosas. $85 p/person.

Procure ingredients
The traditional way to serve a mint julep is in a frozen silver goblet…but if you haven’t inherited your Mamaw’s silver set, a glass will suffice – simple syrup, mint, ice, bourbon – and they’re off!

Brunch at Rye
Rye On Market is offering a by reservation only brunch on both Oaks and Derby day. What more appropriate way to kick off the weekend’s festivities than with a little Rye?

Get your weekend shopping in before the ponies run at some of the fine establishments on Bardstown Rd.

What better time to splurge than on Derby Day? Before your race festivities begin head to The Farmington Historic House for their annual Derby Day Southern Style Breakfast Fundraiser where you’ll enjoy yummy food for a good cause. 9 a.m. – 12 noon $125 p/person.
