You just wrapped up a comic series, “Raymond and the Tralfamadores,” with us. Where did the ideas for Raymond come from? Was it autobiographical?

Loosely autobiographical. I spent most of my late teens and 20s in local bands so I had a lot of personal material to pull from. Most of the stories were based on a real experience or a possible experience I’d imagine having at that time in my life. I basically made Raymond a combination of all the craziest people I knew, including myself. He’s your typical passive aggressive egomaniac.

I know you are planning on starting a new series for The Paper. Do you think you will also move on to any larger-scale comic projects?

The largest upcoming project will be the new series for The Paper. It will be my first attempt at a longer narrative so I’m sure it will take up most of my time. I do hope to collect the Raymond series as a small book and hopefully make a few prints.

What aspects of making these comics have you found challenging/rewarding?

Every part of the process is really challenging to me. I’ve definitely learned so much in this last year though. If I had to pick one single aspect, it would definitely be creating a new story every few weeks. That’s why I’m most excited about the new series. It will be nice to stick with the same story for multiple pages.

The most rewarding aspect is being able to look back at the last year and see what I’ve created in my free time. There have been times in my life when I really can’t remember what I’ve done. Now I have something physical and tangible to show for that time.

Who is your favorite superhero?

El Borbah by Charles Burns. Who doesn’t love a 400-pound private detective in a Mexican wrestling mask?

If you could have any superpower, what would it be? And what vulnerability to go with it?

Man, what a hard question. I’d be a happy man if I had the power to slam-dunk a basketball and then instantly play “Great Balls of Fire” on the piano. Can you imagine that halftime show?

Vulnerability – I’d have to pick sleep. Imagine how much more work you could do if sleep wasn’t an issue.

Anything else you want to say?

I’d like to thank my wife, Sarah, and our friends Jon Shaw, Buckles, and Leif Ashby for being so supportive. A huge thanks to The Paper – Matt, Stephanie, and everyone else involved. You’ve given me a reason to make comics and, as cheesy as it sounds, you’ve made a lifelong dream of being a cartoonist come true.
