Can you tell us a bit about “The Falls”?

Two teenage boys discover a waterfall deep in the woods. They seem to have this hidden paradise all to themselves. They spend each day of their summer exploring, swimming, and growing more and more enamored with their new home away from home. Little do they know this is a restricted military zone. The more they explore, the more they start to realize they aren’t the first ones to find the falls.

How did you come up with the idea for the series?

Well, I initially came up with a concept called “The Humbler.” I wrote three strips of it and realized it was the most negative and depressing thing ever. So that was out (for now). After that, I struggled to think of something I could write that would really be rewarding and interesting to draw. On a road trip through the hills of Kentucky, my mind was flooded with the memories I had as a child playing in the woods with my friends. The ideas just started to flow. We did, in fact, play in the Fort Knox military woods. And we did, in fact, find a waterfall. Most of what I’m pulling together is based on my childhood.

Have you ever made comics before?

This is the first comic I’ve ever officially put together. Ever since I was a very young boy, I have always drawn characters and read comics. It wasn’t until recently that I decided it was time to give it a real shot. And even though it’s early on in my attempts, it has been a thrilling experience. I owe a lot of credit to Jesse Lucas for pushing me to submit a comic to The Paper. I am also sincerely grateful for The Paper providing a platform for artists and writers in the area.

Not having made comics before, what aspects have you found challenging/rewarding?

It’s a tremendous challenge to convey the correct emotions with the character’s facial expressions. Since my strips are short, I need to maximize each panel. It can be a challenge to get the most out of the space. It has been rewarding to just finish a project! After a full day of doing design for other people, it’s hard to muster up the energy to be creative. In the end, it’s highly rewarding to complete something that is all mine.

I know you are only just getting started on this endeavor, but do you think you will move on to any larger-scale comic projects?

Definitely. I was actually in the process of doing a full-size, long-form comic before I started submitting to The Paper. I’ll move back to that at some point. Right now, I’m having a lot of fun with “The Falls” and want to focus all of my energy on it.

Who’s your favorite superhero?

(45 minutes later) Boot Angel from “Love and Rockets: New Stories #1.” I love her because she doesn’t really know what she is doing or what kind of superhero she wants to be. A clueless heroine with a heart of gold – you just can’t beat that.

And the classic question: Flight or invisibility? And why?

Invisibility, without a doubt. I’m a bit of an introvert, so it would be pretty handy in awkward situations. “Hey, what’s that over there?” Bam, invisible!
